Today brought home the truth about what really matters in life.
I have mentioned in an earlier blog that we are repainting on the farm. Well, the professional painter has been painting for our family for over 15 years now. I know him, I trust him to do an excellent job (history has proved this before) and we have become friends over the years.
I had fetched Themba Dube aged 59, overweight but always willing to do what must be done from Durban where he lives, to spend six weeks with us and complete the painting job.
Themba collapsed on site around nine this morning. I suppose it was fortunate that he had mentioned earlier that he was not feeling great and his right arm was feeling very weak. I had spoken to Eric and Sipho to try and solicit wether there was anything else they could get from him at start of work. He just said he would try and take it easy and let us know. I had answeres a phone call and went out to check on him and his progress.
He had fallen adjacent to a rose bush, breathing in a ragged deep throaty growl and I saw blood on his cheek next to his mouth.
We ( Eric/Sipho and myself) had him on the back of the bakkie, lying on chair cushions Anne had brought racing for the clinic some 17km distant. He had been unconcious and incapable when we laid him down to start.
Bev the clinic sister had been called and was waiting for us.
Blood pressure/blood sugar pulse/movement were all checked as he seemed to be coming round. I suppose in the 25 minutes he improved significantly, but could only remember his name not ours, and had no idea where he was/had been working or anything. Bev advised that we get him to a Dr for a thorough check. He was not going to die, but something was wrong.
A 56km trip to howick and a very quick into the Dr's rooms followed.
My old Dr Hyslop, saw Themba and spent over 35 mins checking him out. Result, diagnosed high sugar (Diabetic) which had resulted in arterial blockage and a transient stroke incident. By this time he (Themba)was almost OK and wanted to get home.
We got back around 12.45 and he went straight to bed. Eric has reported since that he seems OK. Sleep well tonight Themba.
What is really important to us in life.
He is my friend-
He appeared to almost die outside my home
He wanted to carry on working even though things were obviously not right.
To hell with chickens/vegetables house painting and chores when someone is in trouble.
Eric Sipho and myself all only wanted to try and help him- this we did
God bless them all.
